Talking with non-Catholic family

Post by Amber on Thu Feb 28, 2008 11:25 am

Back in November, my mom, who is quite opposed to my decision to be Catholic, made a comment regarding the rosary saying, "There is only one mediator." I was taken off guard and was unable to respond, especially since she made her statement and quickly bolted to the grocery store, leaving me a bit taken back and even emotional.

I have composed a letter to her regarding the topic but wonder if it's been too long and I missed my window of opportunity. Has it been too long? Should I wait for another opportunity or just send the letter anyway?

Also, should I always wait for opportunities or is it appropriate to approach them on certain subjects? I feel like faith has become a taboo subject with my parents but I want so desperately to share the truth with them...

Hi Amber,
I would go ahead and send the letter. As to the question of when to Evangelize, I would say whenever an opportunity presents itself, like when your mother made the comment about one mediator. If she had not bolted right after her comment, that would have been a good time.
More importantly, you must become as holy and as devout a Catholic as you can. This way you will evangelize your family without having to debate them. Although sometimes it's hard to see, the BEST tool of evangelization is the witness of a true Christ-like life. This is something we all should be working for.

I hope that makes sense.

I agree with Khaled.
My sister-in-law told me a few years back that the reason she came back to the Church is she saw how we lived our lives. I NEVER said a word about it to her. I just lived it.
I was so delighted and happily surprised to know that our living witness was effective.

I sent the letter! Please pray that it will be well-received with an open heart. If anyone is curious, PM me and I'll send you the letter! Smile
