How can I tell.....

Post by Benedict John-Paul on Mon May 19, 2008 12:24 pm

Dear Group,

How can I tell what sins I need to confess? For years I have had a problem with impatience, and I sometimes feel guilty about it. I know that I should try to develope more patience, but I get confussed about when (or if) I need to confess something like my impateince. It is almost like it is one of those seven deadly sins. Any ideas or feedback on this?bang head

Hi Benedict,

Though we're not required to confess venial sins, it's always a good thing to do. The Catechism says:

1458 Without being strictly necessary, confession of everyday faults (venial sins) is nevertheless strongly recommended by the Church. Indeed the regular confession of our venial sins helps us form our conscience, fight against evil tendencies, let ourselves be healed by Christ and progress in the life of the Spirit.

There are many helpful guides for making an examination of conscience. The one below by the late Fr. Richard Rego is my personal favorite. If you'd like a copy, just let me know.

God bless,

Cindy

Cindy,

Yes I would like something like that. I also can infere from your answer thatconfession and conscience have alot in common as far as forming and training to know what is right as well as telling what is conscience verses what you are feeling. Do I have that right?

Here's the link to a good article about feelings and conscience:

More Than a Feeling: What it Means to Follow Your Conscience (This Rock: September 2007)

I'll send Fr. Rego's booklet right away. I hope it's helpful.

God bless,

Cindy
